Even during economically bleak times, city employees continue to help their community through the Combined Municipal Campaign. This year, they gave more $1.4 million to various local charities, including SHAPE Community Centers, The Hermann Park Conservancy, Child Advocates Inc. and Friends of BARC. The total was about $500,000 more than last year, and shattered the previous CMC record set in 2007, when employees pledged just over $1 million. “Every day, city workers impact the community through their daily jobs. And every year, they impact the community with their wallets through the CMC,” said Julie Keeton, CMC citywide coordinator. “This year, they saw the unemployment numbers and knew while they have good jobs, others weren’t so fortunate, and they really stepped up to help those who need it.” This year’s theme for the annual giving drive was “Be a Do-gooder” and focused on employees fighting back against the struggling economy by helping those who have been affected by it. The campaign includes biweekly or one-time employee donations, an online auction, two golf tournaments, and the Mutt Strutt and Runway Race at Bush Intercontinental Airport. |
