Established by Houston Mayor Annise Parker in August 2011, the Department of Neighborhoods (DON) serves as a centralized source of services and resources for residents. Through its seven divisions, the department provides citizen assistance, gang prevention outreach, inspections and the reduction of blight and substandard residential property, signs code enforcement and programs focusing on education, the concerns of people with disabilities, international communities and volunteerism. The department works in collaboration with other City departments and community partners to improve neighborhoods and help make Houston a better place to live.
